Description

This position in the Kadosh lab involves conducting research projects designed to determine the molecular mechanisms of fungal pathogenesis.  More specifically, a variety of bioinformatic, genetic, genomic, biochemical, cellular and molecular biological approaches will be taken to study mechanisms that control morphology, virulence and virulence-related properties in pathogenic Candida species. Many opportunities are available for collaboration with both basic and clinical mycologists at the San Antonio Center for Medical Mycology (see http://www.sacmm.org/). This group represents one of the largest mycology centers in the U.S. and includes 12 laboratories working on a variety of topics in fungal pathogenesis. This position will also involve preparation of manuscripts and abstracts for presentation.



Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate and carry out research experiments involving growth of fungal and bacterial cultures, RNA and DNA isolation. Apply complex techniques including bioinformatic analysis, PCR, Western analysis, protein purification, quantitative RT-PCR, RNA-seq and other deep sequencing techniques, gene cloning, electrophoresis, gene expression analysis (various methods), DIC/fluorescence microscopy, phenotypic analysis, chromatin immunoprecipitation, pathogen-host cell adhesion assays, transformation and genetic modification of Candida albicans strains. Interact and perform experiments in conjunction with collaborators. 

  • Mouse inoculations and dissections. Tissue homogenization for determination of organ fungal burdens. Monitoring mouse survival over the course of fungal infections.

  • Assist in the analysis and interpretation of research data and preparation of manuscripts, abstracts and reports for publication. 

  • Presentation of research findings at local, regional and national conferences.

  • General laboratory maintenance.

  • Provide direction and training to students and other laboratory personnel when needed.



Qualifications

  • Highly motivated individuals with previous experience and a strong publication track record in molecular biology, genomics, cell biology, genetics, bioinformatics and/or protein chemistry are especially encouraged to apply. 

  • Previous experience in mouse inoculations and dissections is strongly preferred but not required. 

  • Prior experience in fungal pathogenesis is desirable, but not necessarily required. 

  • Computer skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, good verbal and written skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask effectively are strongly preferred.


EDUCATION:



  • Master's degree in related field is required.

  • Doctorate degree is preferred.
