Description


Under general supervision, responsible for performing a wide variety of medical and clinical support functions in an outpatient clinical settings. May assist with clinical and laboratory procedures, maintain equipment, provide direct patient care, and administer common medications according to unit guidelines and providers' orders. May support the documentation of patients as dictated by the physician or provider.



Responsibilities
  • Intakes patients by obtaining vital signs, weight, etc.
  • Obtains history, chief complaint, medications, allergies, EKG, etc. and documents appropriately in the Electronic medical record.
  • Report all pertinent findings to Physicians.
  • Manages patient's appointments according to the doctor's schedules and protocols.
  • Triages calls, medications/refills and facilitates patient needs, and documents all communication into the EMR system.
  • Answers messages from patients by clinic policy.
  • Handle all medication refills or request via clinic policy.
  • Prepares charts as necessary for next scheduled clinic, provide physician with all necessary test results, lab results and medical records as requested.
  • Communicate all necessary patient information to physician in a timely manner.
  • Handles and answers external as well as internal phone calls and assists in department call center transferring calls to the appropriate departments.
  • Triage calls, medications/refills and facilitates patient needs, and documents all communication into the electronic medical records (EMR) system.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Demonstrates analytical thinking – this role requires analyzing information and using logic to coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates the ability to participate as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient the UT Health Way.
  • Knowledge of EPIC software; may be required to be EPIC super user.

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Graduation from a Medical Assistant program or equivalent training/experience in healthcare is required.

Experience:

Three (3) years of directly-related experience as a Medical Assistant is required.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION:

  • CPR certification is required.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification is preferred.
